I LOVE LOVE LOVE Halloween and I’ll be sad when its over. It is definitely my favorite holiday. I love having the house decorated for Halloween and I think it will have to stay that way until next weekend to prolong the fun just a bit. I don’t understand some people who are grumpy about Halloween and who freak out over “what to do with the candy”! I keep seeing ideas for parents to sneak, bribe or steal their kids candy away and I think its nuts and kind of mean. We are going to go trick or treating tonight rain or shine and the kids can eat their candy. No restrictions, its just once a year and if they totally pig out and eat a ton of chocolate and sugar they will live and live happily! Who wants their kids to grow up remembering how they’d cry on Halloween after collecting candy only to have it taken away? I confess, I will pull out those awful tooth breaking stupid candy (like Laffy Taffy) but all the rest is theirs on eat. I have such fun Halloween memories from when I was a kid and I hope my kids will have even better memories! I’m so looking forward to tonight (and hoping it doesn’t rain). Oh and to make this Halloween extra memorable, Jillian decided to learn to walk today! She had been taking 1 or 2 little steps since her birthday last week but today (her due date last year) she is taking 6-7 steps at a time!

I was sitting here at the computer yesterday morning, I had just fed Jillian to sleep, when the phone rang. I saw from the caller ID that it was school and I figured one of the boys was sick but it was one of the ladies from the main office telling me to come get Ethan because he fell and cut his head on the playground and the nurse thought he needed stitches! I quick called John and told him to get in the car and start driving and then I called my mom but she wasn’t there and then I called our pediatrician and they said to take him right to the ER. Since my mom was out (I forgot she had to go to a funeral) I had to take PJ wearing Jamie and sleeping Jillian (who I woke up putting her in the car seat). I called John from the car and we decided he would meet us at the ER. When I got to the nurse’s office I walked in to Ethan’s teacher and the nurse both leaning over Ethan as he sat in a wheelchair with his head wrapped in a huge bandage and I felt sick to my stomach. It was just such a scary sight but when I walked in I tried to smile and not show him that I was a mess (I practically dropped the baby carseat on the floor and paid no attention to Jamie as I went over to where Ethan was). He looked fine though, even with his bloody hair sticking up from the circle on the top of his head that was not bandaged. The nurse put me at ease by saying maybe he would just need the glue to close it and that he wasn’t showing any signs of concussion. He acted fine and was amazingly good. He continued to be super well behaved as we waited in the ER (amongst some of the grossest sick people I could imagine…flu sick I fear) and he was great for the doctor too, even during the shots and the stitches. I couldn’t have hoped for stitches to go any better. The doctor was a woman and she talked him through everything and made jokes and told him his new nickname was “Bloody Mess” (which he was). Anyway he still showed no concussion signs so she sent us home (actually to McDonalds, where Grandma had taken the middle 2 kids so they didn’t have to stay at the ER with us). All seemed fine until I got him in the house and he said “when Daddy gets home I want to show him my stitches!”, he was starting to get a bit spacey? John had been there when the stitches were done and at McDonalds but we were in separate cars so he wasn’t home yet. Then he dropped some toys … and then he walked into a wall. I started getting nervous and watched him carefully and then he looked funny walking a little later and said he was dizzy and his head hurt. SO I called the pediatrician and she said go back to the ER for a CAT scan. Poor Ethan freaked out, he did not want to go back! John took him and they were there all night. Luckily the CAT scan was fine! No sports or gym for a week and I kept him home today. He is a bit wild and goofy today and not himself but I am hoping that its just from lack of sleep since he didn’t get to bed until after 10:30 last night. I am looking forward to EARLY bedtimes for all of the kids tonight!
*I got pictures of him with my cell phone…not sure how to get them on the computer though!
UPDATE 10-29: Stitches came out yesterday and he is all better! Here are 2 stitches pictures from last week.
The dogs used to be our babies but now with 4 kids they are … the dogs, but we still love them lots! Reuben and Casey are both 10 years old and we don’t buy them many treats because the kids give them plenty of people food (and sometimes daily its the dogs “helping themselves” to kids’ snacks). Santa always brings them special doggy treats though and this year they got to get a sneak preview of some yummy treats for their very first blog review! Its about time they get some love on the blog!
Bit-O-Luv dog treats were of course a hit with Reuben and Casey! They sat at attention when I opened the bag and by the time it came to giving them seconds Casey was so excited she got a little piece of my finger as well! The treats aren’t like dog biscuits or those weird plastic looking treats, they are dried meat strips (like beef jerky). I like the size, not itty bitty but small enough that I can give the dogs 2-3 each. If Santa is looking for any gift ideas for your dogs, you can find these on Amazon and at many grocery and pet stores.
Here is why Bit-O-Luv pet treats are not only yummy to dogs but good for them too:
- They are made in the USA with USDA-inspected beef and chicken (that’s good enough for humans, but specially formulated for dogs).
- They contain NO artificial colors or flavors
- They do not contain by-products
- They have no wheat gluten
- Bit-O-Luv comes in 3 flavors: Bistro Beef Recipe, Roasted Chicken Recipe and Smokehouse (chicken and beef)
Its funny how I go through such different blog phases. I used to care about stats and thought it would be lots of fun to get really crazy with the reviewing and giveaways but I never look at the stats now. I also went through the phase where I wanted to share “all my cool mom ideas and projects” but that was too much effort to do regularly. Then I just wanted to keep track of cute things the kids did in lieu of keeping baby books and scrapbooks but sometime over last winter (as I was adjusting to life with 4 kids) I lost most of my desire to blog about anything at all. BUT now I really feel like it again and I’ve been posting away! I am not sure what type of blogging I want to do most, just whatever comes up but I have to say its been fun doing some reviews again. I don’t get a ton of product offers but its always interesting to see what people want me to try. I am picky, I only say yes to about 1/2 of the reviews. I turn down almost all grown-up books (just don’t make the time to read anymore), children’s music (because I hate most of it), and anything that I don’t feel pretty sure we will truly like and use. I have only failed to write a review on 2 things that I received and it was because they did not live up to my expectations and I didn’t want to write a negative review or promote something I didn’t like!
So thats it…this blog is something I’m enjoying doing when I need a break and the kids are playing happily and it is what it is! And I hate posts without pictures so here is a recent picture of Jamie that I love.
I was sent some Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate juice to review. I have heard for awhile now how healthy pomegranate is and a few years back I bought the fruit but wasn’t sure what to do with it and although it was pretty I didn’t enjoy it. Then I started noticing Pomegranate juice in the store and was intrigued but never tried it until this review. Straight from the bottle its a new taste for me, a bit strong but good. I like to add a little water or seltzer and a lot of ice. I really like that its something so good for you (its packed with powerful antioxidants, much more than red wine) and would drink it just for the health benefits alone but the flavor is growing on me the more I drink it. My next step is to try to cook with it! The POM Wonderful website is very informative, including the big recipe section! The recipe that I want to try the most is the POM Velvet Cupcakes -YUM!
POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice is a little bit sweet, a little bit tart and a whole lotta healthy. Bursting with superior levels of naturally occurring antioxidants and backed by $32 million in medical research, it’s also 100% authentic, 100% delicious and 100% pure, meaning there’s no added sugar, colorants or cheap filler juices. So raise a glass to life. And the pursuit of healthiness.
All of POM Wonderful Juices (including POM Blueberry, Cherry, Mango, Kiwi & Nectarine):
- contain no added sugars, preservatives or colors
- are a good source of potassium
- are gluten-free
- are flash pasteurized to retain both flavor and nutrients
- are certified kosher
You can find POM Wonderful Juices in the refrigerated section of the produce department of your local supermarket.
I never got around to posting about Ethan’s birthday party, probably because I hardly took any pictures at all, but I figured I better get to it before Jillian’s birthday gets here! There is Ethan in the orange shirt, its the ONLY pictures that I got of him during the entire party! What a cute bunch of kids collecting candy from the Pokeball pinata (they were super good sharing…it was a pleasant surprise)! Including our own kids, there were 19 kids at the party. We lucked out and had great weather and everything went well. I love having parties for the kids! I don’t understand when parents aren’t into throwing birthday parties, I don’t think I could ever get tired of it!
Ethan and Ben are both really into Pokemon right now and it was an easy theme for a party. I made Pokeball cupcakes for him to bring into school and for the party. They were super easy. I went for the best look with the least amount of effort/time expended. Simply frost the entire cupcake with white frosting and then dip half into a plate of red colored sugar (much quicker than using 2 colors of frosting and boy would you need a lot of coloring to get red and not pink), then use a pastry bag to pipe a wide stripe of chocolate frosting, add an extra little drop of chocolate frosting in the center of the stripe and then push in a mini marshmallow.
For the Pokeball pinata I had originally planned on making my own (made a basketball one once and it was great) BUT I got lazy and bought a baseball pinata and altered it. I carefully pulled off the red lines off of half, painted half red and then added a black stripe and white circle (the circle was the only part I wasn’t happy with but it was just going to get smashed so I didn’t care). Unfortunately the store bought pinata wasn’t as sturdy as my super strong basketball one and the kids were a lot stronger at 7 yrs old, so the pinata broke a bit prematurely. The kids thought it was a fun hat though!
John really is smart, he thought of leaving our computer on with the Mac photo booth open! The kids made over a hundred silly pictures of themselves and it was fun to look at after. They liked doing it on their own and had fun with the weird settings (like those goofy carnival mirrors but better).
“OxiClean® Laundry Stain Remover gets out your toughest laundry stains and odors such as wine, blood, dirt, tomato, pet stains, grass stains and even set-in stains. This unique laundry stain removal formula starts to work before your eyes so you can be confident the stain will come out. This laundry stain removal formula is also chlorine-free and colorsafe. ”
GreatCleaners.com sent me some OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover Spray to try out and I’m very happy with the results! My boys hardly make any stains but my 2 youngest, the GIRLS, are super MESSY and I always am trying to get stains out of their clothes. Jillian just won’t wear a bib anymore (see what she does) and she also insists on feeding herself with the spoon so she is making some pretty filthy shirts for me to wash and this review couldn’t have come at a better time. When its an organic stain the OxiClean bubbles up as soon as you spray it on the stain. You can see it working! I have had good luck with it on many stains, even ones that were old. I am usually careful about checking the girls’ clothes before putting them in the dryer and when I find stubborn stains I use the spray a second time and rewash. Of course some stains are hopeless but I get most out with some patience and the OxiClean.
I have an Arm & Hammer Stain Removal Kit to giveaway (it includes the OxiClean spray).

Oh I LOVE fall (yes even these CHILLY fall days this week)! Here are the kids at 3 different local farms, last week seeing animals and getting pumpkins and yesterday on a trip to pick apples. I actually got a bunch of pictures with all 4 together! Ethan is so good holding Jillian and Ben is getting there so its a lot easier to pass one of the boys a baby and snap away!
Poor Ethan, its really impossible for him to pick an apple and eat it this year – NO TOP TEETH! I baked him some last night but he didn’t like it so instead he had his apples cut up. We usually grow our own pumpkins but my garden was a total flop this year! Luckily there is a nice man a road away who grows them and sells them super cheap.
