Who doesn’t love Cheerios, but now there is a reason to love them more: books inside the box! Not only are there books but they are books by new authors that Cheerios is helping to follow their dreams! Through its annual New Author Contest Cheerios cereal will award one Grand Prize Winner  a $5,000 cash prize and a possible publishing deal with Simon & Schuster Children´s Publishing, in addition to having his or her book featured inside Cheerios cereal boxes nationwide.
Founded on the belief that reading is a key building block for learning and life, the Cheerios New Author Contest encourages ambitious authors to write and submit an original story, in either English or Spanish, suitable for children ages three to eight. The contest, which is an extension of the Spoonfuls of Stories program, is part of the brand´s ongoing commitment to nurturing the whole child and connecting families by fostering a shared love of reading.
Laurie Isop, of Renton, Wash., won the literary lottery when she was named Grand Prize Winner of the 2009 Cheerios New Author Contest. Laurie, a small business owner, mother of two boys, and aspiring author since the age of 12, can now add “published author” to her resume. This spring, Laurie´s book How Do You Hug a Porcupine? will be featured in more than three million specially-marked boxes of Cheerios and will also be available in bookstores nationwide beginning this July.

My girls really loved How Do You Hug a Porcupine and I thought it was really cute myself! Congratulations to Laurie! Those who want to follow in Laurie´s footsteps and think they have the “write” stuff can visit from March 22 through July 15, 2011 to find out more. You can also click here to see a clip of Laurie talking about her experience in the contest and her tips!

ENTER TO WIN a prize pack that includes a box of Cheerios with Laurie Isop´s book inside, as well as a “create-your-own” book kit for kids that contains two hard cover books and all the necessary materials to creatively fill the pages inside, including story starter ideas and colored pencils.

YAY Caillou toys!!!!

Jamie and Jillian are currently very into Caillou so the offer to review two of the new line of Caillou toys could not have come at a better time! We already had some Caillou books but now the girls have a big Caillou doll and a Caillou sailboat toy for the bath tub! The bath toy is pretty neat because it floats well and has a working propeller on the bottom that my girls can easily wind (it comes off so that you can play with the boat on a flat surface out of the tub). The Caillou and dinosaur figures both snap apart and can actually be mixed up and my kids love that. I think Caillou will be sailing in our swimming pool soon! The Caillou doll is also really cute and is the perfect size to carry around and hug (yes thats Jillian holding her Caillou while she is watching Caillou). His red sneakers are my favorite. Both of these toys get a thumbs up from my girls and the rest of the line looks fun too. I think Jillian would really love having Rosie and you can find her in some of the line like the train below.  Caillou toys can be found at 272 participating Toys R Us stores (visit store locator at and the

Thanks to Caillou and Childs Play for providing the two fun toys for review!

Dinosaur Train Eggs for Easter and a GIVEAWAY!

The Dinosaur Train is one of our favorite kid shows and we were happy to do another review of one of their products! If you’re looking for non-candy ideas for Easter the Dinosaur Train Hatchers eggs are pretty neat. My kids love this sort of thing. With Hatchers the characters from Dinosaur Train hatch from their eggs and grow 4x their size!  It’s simple, easy fun…just place the egg in water and wait for it to crack! It takes between 24-48 hrs for the process to finish. I decided to give the one we got to my 6 year old and he was very into checking on his egg as he waited for it to hatch in the water. These are a good size and are bigger than chicken eggs. Ben’s egg had Tiny in it and it took 2 days to fully hatch. Once you take it out of the water it slowly shrinks back down and you can grow it again whenever you want.

Also check out the Dinosaur Train Eggspress application, now for iPhone, iPod and iPad ($2.99), challenges your child to find and match dinosaur eggs and then reunite dinosaur families while progressing through three different time periods. Your child will discover real flora and fauna from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous eras. Along the way, there will be learning moments as Buddy and the Conductor reveal mystery dinosaur hatchlings, fun dinosaur facts, and an adorable Dinosaur Baby Book.  All aboard! Check out this review from Geek Dad:

T-shirt Printing .net sent me one of their t-shirts to review (and I am entered into a drawing to win 12 t-shirts that I can design myself). They specialize in making silk screened  clothing that is  personalized with the words/logo of your choice. You have to order at least 12 but they do not all have to be the same size so I think its a great idea for families! How fun for a big family to make coordinating shirts to wear on vacation or for a family reunion or for guests at a child’s birthday party. Their are six people in our family so if I won it would be neat for each of us to get two shirts with our last name and a fun graphic (I could order each kid their current size and the next size up to prolong the fun). Of course they do big orders for companies as well. You can choose from mens and womens t-shirts, kids t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, tank tops and work shirts.

We were sent this grey shirt with a monkey on it and the picture doesn’t do it justice. The silk screening is very well done with vivid color, the shirt a good quality and it washed and dried great.
