Welcome to DIY Thursday
As part of our site reorganization I wanted to dedicate a day to DIY. Since we bought our house 7 years ago I’ve been learning more and more about renovation and it has become my favorite hobby. We’ve done some sort of renovation to almost every room in our house. Here’s a quick list of projects:
- Basement family room gutted to replace flood and mold damage. New floor, restructured walls, new windows, new ceiling.
- Gutted and installed 2 bathrooms
- Gutted kitchen and installed all new cabinets and flooring
- Gutted dining room – Heather is about to repaint that now
- Built playfort for kids
- Built new stairs to porch – working on a new deck now
Mixed in among the big projects was smaller ones. We’ve replaced all of the outlets and switches, most of the light fixtures, put up new shelving, molding, etc, etc. It can be a lot of work, but when you own your home it can be a very rewarding project.
On Thursdays I plan to post updates on my given projects, let you know about my favorites tools, share some tips, tricks, and lessons I learned from mistakes. I’d also love to answer questions so if anyone is working on their own DIY project and needs some input, post a comment and I’ll share what I know.
My goal for the rest of the year to to try and finish all the big projects I’ve started. Hopefully in the new year I’ll have some time for trying my hand at woodworking. I want to build some more kid sized adirondack chairs and also try my hand at a simple bookcase or cabinet.

Here’s my personal request: tell me about your bathroom remodeling! I’m thinking of tearing up the tile on our bathroom floor, replacing some rotting subfloor, new toilet, new floor tile, new tub surround. Tell me all your advice and help me to feel less stressed about it, pretty please! I have extreme anxiety.
