Favorite Podcasts
I’ve been meaning to add a post about my favorite podcasts. After 2 years I am still completely enthralled with the ability to download high quality shows, for FREE, and listen to them during my commute to work. Before I’d gotten my first mp3 player I was dreading the 30 minute drives because local radio is very tedious. Since then I abandoned radio and haven’t looked back.
Here is a run down of what I listen too.
Parenting Shows
- Manic Mommies – moms trying to do it all and do it well
- Jumping Monkeys – parenting in the digital age
Tech Shows
- This Week in Tech (aka TWIT)
- Cranky Geeks – John C Dvorak, the curmudgeon of tech
- MacBreak Weekly – I don’t own a mac, but I want to
- Diggnation – 2 guys, beer, and the top stories of the week from Digg.com
- net@nite – what’s new on the web
Podiobooks (think free books on tape in a weekly format)
- Anything by Scott Sigler (Earthcore, Ancestor, Infection, The Rookie)
- 7th Son Trilogy by J.C. Hutchins
- Crescent by Phil Rossi
- One Among the Sleepless by Mike Bennett
Other Favorites
- Escape Pod – scifi short stories
- Pseudo Pod – horror short stories
- Air Out My Shorts – BAD short stories
- NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me – current events news quiz
- NPR’s Car Talk call of the week
- Sens Underground – great hockey podcast
- Tiki Bar TV – my one and only video podcast
Obviously, these podcasts are geared towards a geek dad with no kids in the car. I’ve been looking for more family friendly podcasts that the kids would like to listen to. Before our last vacation I found Storynory a great podcast of childrens stories. The boys really liked it.
If you have an ipod, try some of these out. Since they’re free it is easy to subscribe, try a show, and cancel if you don’t like it. When I find one I like I listen for their recommendations to find mroe great shows. What I really love about this format is that it allows very creative people to share their work with the masses. The creators are very accessible and I’ve contacted several of them on occasion with questions and suggestions. I’ve even been interviewed on Sens Underground a couple times.
If you have a favorite podcast give them a plug in the comments and I’ll try it out.

Thanks for the plug!
Thanks for that great mention! I would like to point out that I made Phil Rossi say thank you. He has horrible manners. Runs with scissors, talks with his mouth full, stuff like that. A lot of potential in that kid, but man, born in a barn or something.
