The strange kid

I’ve started a new ritual when I put the boys to bed where I ask them what good things they did today and what their favorite part of the day was. Just questions to get them thinking about positive things from each day and also get them thinking about good things they can do the next day. I also decided we should record excerpts of these conversations in a diary. I bought a new hard cover spiral bound book (so it folds over nice for Ethan and Ben to draw in) for recording these entries. On Wednesday night Ben fell asleep early on the couch so it was just Ethan and myself talking about his day at school…

Ethan - “Well, there’s a kid at school who doesn’t come a lot, but was there today”

Me - “Oh did you make friends with him?”

Ethan - “Well he’s kind of strange” (He uses “well” all the time when he’s being serious)

Me - “How is he strange?”

Ethan - “He’s kind of spread out…I don’t want to say he’s fat…but he’s skinny too. He’s a skinny fat kid…”

He continued to elaborate on this conundrum, but I was having a hard time keeping myself from laughing at this point. I find it so hilarious to hear kids’ perspectives on things. I’m going to continue keeping our nightly journal and I look forward to hearing some more insights from Ethan and Ben.

We did that too! Favorite things at bedtime! It was the most lovely winding down thing, and now I’m wishing I’d thought to keep a journal about it - although I’m not sure our four ever said anything as hilarious as “skinny fat kid.” :-)
