DIY toolbox – Non contact voltage tester
One of the skills I’ve learned since buying our house is electrical work. Messing with your electrical can be very intimidating, but any good home improvement book will teach you the basics. The easiest changes are replacing light fixtures, switches, and outlets, but even adding additional lighting and outlets is pretty easy when you have opened up a wall to replace sheetrock or add insulation.

One tool I discovered that is invaluable to me for doing this work is a non contact voltage tester
. Initially I had a simple voltage tester with 2 wires that you touch to your electrical wires to see if they are hot. It is a lot like playing Operation, but if you miss you could get a lot more than a buzz. A non contact voltage tester is exactly what the name implies…a tool that will tell you if a line is on without making contact. You just hold it near the wire, switch, or outlet and it will light up and chirp at you if there’s juice. It even works through sheetrock! This gadget is a must for anyone who owns a home. Or you could test the old fashioned way, lick your fingers and touch

Nice post. I agree with you John, electrical works can be quite intimidating. However, if you tinker with it every now and then (or do a bit of research) you will discover that they are not as quite as intimidating as you thought they were. The “non contact voltage tester” that you feature here is quite good. I hope you will feature more tools in the future. Anyway, Thanks for posting this. Enjoyed reading this post.
