Styrofoam popcorn insulation?

0

dscf9530.jpgOver the years I’ve been slowly replacing the pine on the walls of our basement with mildew resistant sheetrock. I’ll never forget the first time we opened up a wall and discovered what had been used for insulation…packing peanuts! I have no idea how they got them to fill the cavities. I can only guess they stapled the plastic almost to the top and poured them in. One problem we discovered is that once you open up a wall the popcorn settles and makes the wall bulge out if you try to put it back. Instead I took all the peanuts out and used hard foam insulation which has a higher R-value and won’t hold onto moisture. I also didn’t use any vapor barrier so the concrete will be able to breath properly. As big of a pain as it can be, I have to confess that I enjoy gutting a room and putting it all back together.
