Great simple project. Built a king platform bed over the weekend using these plans. Made a few alterations. I knew I wanted a clean painted finish so I opted for 3/4" birch plywood instead of 2X lumber. I have a table saw so I was able to rip the plywood down. I also wanted to keep the weight down so the 3/4 ply was stable but light. I wanted a lower look so I reduced the base to 6" h instead of 10". Also to reduce weight I used 1/2" mdf instead of 3/4" . Stuff weighs a ton anyway.
Because of the painted finish I didn't want screw heads showing so instead of screwing from outside in I grabbed my KREG pocket hole jig and all screw heads are inside the bed frame. I was able to build and paint in the garage and carry upstairs in 4 pieces. Base, platform frame, 2 mdf platform tops. All carried by myself . Also able to slide it around with a little effort but still very stable and strong. I designed it with 12" of overhang all the way around so it really looks like it is floating. Total about $140 in materials

An easy way to fix the corner problem is to just but some 1/4 to 3/4 rounded corner trim, it fits right over the corner, just use trim nails to keep it on

I would like to do the same and install a couple of drawers in the base. What did you do for the cutouts to maintain the strength of the base?

Thanks for these instructions -just finished building this project. Very happy with the results. Now to run a nice finished board around three sides, and it'll be all wrapped up.

I wanted to make the base smaller but didn't want it so small that it will not properly support the bed. What size did you use?

What would the measurements be for a twin size platform bed like the one above? How many pieces of the above materials would I need?

Is there a way you could tell me what all I would need to add a headboard?

I just built this after searching for ages for a good self-made bed. I used pine slats instead of the mdf & made the base smaller so it looks like the bed floats...thanks for posting this!

I'm so glad I came across your page!!! I was looking for a way to build a platform bed....great PIC'S and instructions!!
I actually have two twins that needed to fit together, so what I did was made my bottom base 6 inches high. I also didn't want a flat platform because we have box springs also...lol didn't want to go sliding off. So for the top I build a box frame out of 2x12's braced the inside with 2x2's and dropped the box spring in the box. It's great! Just enough of a lip to keep the top mattresses in place, stained the whole thing and made a head board. All of which I couldn't do if I hadn't come across your page. Thank YOU so much!!!!
