Help me wash apples! & Organic Produce Guide

3

img_0595.jpgI need help! I want to know how people wash their produce prior to eating it. It sounds simple but I always wonder if I’m doing an adequate job. For some things I run them under water and rub them with my hands and for others like grapes I put them in a big bowl and fill the bowl with water, swish it around (sometimes leaving it to soak) and then drain the water (and sometimes repeat). I worry that just water won’t do the trick but I don’t like the idea of buying a “veggie wash” type of product either.
SO HELP, HOW DO YOU WASH YOUR PRODUCE???

Oh and I try to buy organic as much as possible but its not always an option. Like for weeks I’ve bought the bad grapes because my kids are asking for them and my store doesn’t have organic ones this time of year. Luckily they are very into apples right now too and our store always has them organic. I try to go by this food guide (tells you what things are most important to get organic and ones that are relatively safe either way) and things like bananas I always but regular but I try to buy only organic berries. Its such a hard thing making sure your food is safe enough!

Alright my friend just suggested I link to What Works For Me Wednesday to get help with this!

Shannon over at Rocks in My Dryer http://rocksinmydryer.typepad.com/ is doing the backwards edition of Works For Me Wednesday, where you ask a question instead of offering advice… you should link this post there, I bet you’d get better advice than I can give!

I just use water & lots of friction too…

I buy organic apples, like you do and bananas most of the time. Berries are way more expensive organic, but I try to do that sometimes as well. I wash well with water and rub with a paper towel. Also, In the “picking months” I try and pick my own apples and blueberries (as I know you do) and I think that helps. I, too, struggle the most with grapes. I have also really been buying the FYFGA (Wegmans) ground beef and chicken sometimes.

You can also sprinkle them with baking soda first then rinse them well.
