Unplugged Project: Shiny

This weeks Unplugged Project had REM’s Shiny Happy People going through my head every time I thought about what we might do (it wasn’t so helpful really). I also kept thinking of the book Dazzle The Dinosaur so I almost did something related to that but when I looked through my saved junk I thought necklaces and bracelets might be fun. I gave the kids shiny pipe cleaners, elastic, bells and ribbons. I showed them how to wrap the pipe cleaners around a pencil to so that they could string them on their elastic. It turns out all our shiny stuff was too itchy to wear so Ethan got Lion Cub and Ben got Cattie and now their friends have shiny, jingly necklaces. Jamie didn’t seem to mind hers being itchy so she has a bracelet to shake (she was too sad looking after a morning of throwing up and the D word so I didn’t include her picture this time).

We love stringing projects too… yesterday JediBoy was making all kinds of things from a set Robin brought - bracelets for everyone at the table, even the babies! and then some rings. I love the curly pipe cleaner idea!

My kids only know the song as the Shiny Happy Monsters song from REM’s appearance on Sesame Street!

    Hope Jamie is feeling better…

I wish you hadn’t mentioned Shiny Happy People, now I’ll be singing it all day! Thanks! LOL

Your jewelery idea is a fun one, and a nice change from the foil fixation that most of the rest of us seem to have had this week. The curly pipecleaners are very clever. I always learn things from other people’s projects!

I hope you little ones feel better soon.

Cute necklaces, but I understand the itch factor. Nice save putting them on the stuffed friends.

Thank you for the tips on creating pipe cleaner corkscrews. We will use that someday.

Shiny Happy People :-) Excellent I’d not heard that in years but it’s now playing here on youtube.

    Great project too.

What a great idea! I really like the pipe cleaner necklaces. I am filing that one away to use some other time.
