Spikey Returns!
Our beloved backyard garter snake, Spikey, has returned. This is the 3rd Spring we have found Spikey living by our porch, but this year we spotted a skinny little friend with him. They were both skittish, but Spikey stuck his head out to say hello.

Wow, I hope you had a telephoto lens to take that shot!!
Actually, Spikey is unbelievably tame for a wild snake. The boys were able to pet him last summer. He was a little skittish so we gave him his room, but I took this pic from about 2 feet away. Ben spent about 15 minutes talking to Spikey and telling him the names of everyone in our family so he won’t be scared of us.
That is a fantastic picture! I spent the weekend with my grandkids, ages 3 and 1-1/2. The also have a HUGE boulder in their back yard, with a small family of garter snakes in the same colring as your picture.
Although the childrens mother was a little nervous with me and the kids getting a closer look. We did end up getting up close and personal with the snake family. To within about 2 feet. And the adult snake didn’t even move til the younger kid went to pet the snakes.
The kids enjoyed seeing the snake, plus we got to see a red tailed hawk, and a bunch of cardinals flying around.
All in all a great weekind to get the kids outside. Kids love nature.
