Review: Discovery Channel Store Toy – Rapelli

0

Thanks to The Discovery Channel Store and the Parent Bloggers Network we have a great new toy for our 3 & 5 year old boys to play with. The Rapelli is a game made out of bamboo so it is environmentally friendly in addition to being lots of fun.

The game is designed very well with the cylinder cut in half from top to bottom. One half has the black elastic attached which easily pulls the other half snug. The caterpillars have elastic holding the segments together so they will wiggle when you shake them and look really cute. Even before playing the game the kids had fun playing with all the pieces.

What I really love about this game is that it has some depth to it. The rules of the game are very simple: each person picks a color and puts their corresponding caterpillars into the tube. You then take turns rolling the dice which will give you a color and a direction to move with the number of moves. This directs you to move that colored caterpillar either in or out of the tube the number of segments show on the die. The winner is that last caterpillar in the tube.

The strategy comes in when you decide whose caterpillar to take out and even which caterpillar is best to use a 3 move extraction on. I explained to the kids the importance of getting the most out of your moves and they started catching on thinking about their moves a little more. A game takes about 15-30 minutes depending on the number people playing and the number of colors each has. We usually played 3 person games with 2 colors each.

We really love Rapelli and the only complaint we have is that the game will sometimes devolve into a caterpillar puppet show because the pieces are so cute and wiggly.
