Ethan is in Kindergarten!

1

Our morning went very smoothly today for Ethan’s first day of Kindergarten!  John and I (and Ben & Jamie) drove Ethan to school and walked him in. He was excited and not upset at all so it was much easier than I thought (I didn’t even shed a tear somehow but I did bang my head on the cabinet over his cubby). Now John went to work and I’m home all day today with just 2 kids! I told Ethan that while he is in school we’d make a special dessert for him that we’ll eat tonight after football. Now I need to figure something out to make!Last night John and I took Ethan to meet his teacher and see his classroom. His teacher is very nice and the classroom has 2 birds and some caterpillars/crysalis that will become Monarch butterflies. There are 19 kids in the class so that is a nice size (and no other Ethans which I was worried about). Ethan knows 2 other boys already which is great. I can’t wait to see how he liked school when he gets off the bus this afternoon! I’m going to always drive him mornings (because starting Monday I’ll need to drive Ben to preschool every day) but the plan is for him to come home on the bus afternoons. I am nervous about him riding the bus but he likes the idea so we’ll see how it goes!

John’s Thoughts – I was initially nervous about kindergarten, but Ethan put me at ease.  He was excited about going. At orientation last night he was clearly enthusiastic about the new school and he likes his teacher.  What I did not expect at all was the flood of memories that came back to me from my time in elementary school.  We have a tendency to dramatize the bad times, but I remember so many good times and lots of friends.  Yes, school has problems that we focus on as adults, but as a kid it is still about friends and fun.

This weekend I plan on taking Ethan and Ben to see Star Wars in the theater and I told Ethan to ask his new classmates if they like Star Wars and if they’d seen the movie.  Funny, how some things never change, I remember spending most of kindergarten pretending to be Luke Skywalker.  Today I can’t help but think about some of the things we focus on as adults.  Why do we have a tendency to dwell on the negative so much when there are so many cool and fun things happening now?  I can’t help but smile when I think of Ethan and his classmates buzzing about the things that are important to them – toys, games, and stories.

This was such a sweet post and brought back memories of my two oldest’s first school days. Only two at home? Sounds like party time to me! LOL!
