Crokinole

1

Over the last couple years we’ve put together a nice collection of boards games (I LOVE Haba) and a couple months ago I decided we should set aside time to play games with the boys.  What started as a game night has turned into an almost nightly ritual.  Once Jamie goes to bed, I let the boys pick out a game to play and we have a blast for about an hour before they go to bed.  We alternate games and on nights when we have a slumber party in the family room we’ll each pick out a game and take turns playing.

Two weeks ago I decided the boys were old enough to play a game that my father had given me called Crokinole.  The board is octogonal with a circular playing surface.  Each player gets pucks and we take turns flicking them into the center trying to either land in a higher point zone or knock an opponent out of that zone.  The boys love it and we’ve been playing it every night.  We alternate between playing a tournament where we all play against each other or playing teams where Ben and I gang up to take on Ethan and one of his stuffed animals.

With Christmas looming I decided to start posting what some of our favorite games were, especially the ones that are not on the typical top 10 holiday gift lists.  While looking for a photo to include for this post I found a website, Crokinole.com,  that sells gorgeous Crokinole boards and also has the history of the game.  What I love about this game is that it is fun and challenging for every age.  I had a blast playing it in college and am having just as much fun playing with Ethan and Ben now.  My only caution is that since the board and pucks are wood, they can chip if mishandled.  I’ve been putting the game away each night so the boys don’t decided to try the pucks for a hockey game and so Jamie doesn’t teeth on them.  Our set only has 2 colors, but we used a marker to put dots on half the tan pucks (other ones are black) so we could play 3 player.  Looking at the Crokinole website I think Santa might slip a couple other colors into some stockings this year so we can handle 4 player.

SIGH! We had a lovely old Crokinole board from auction that got ruined in the first flood – 2004 – because we got water in the basement while we were out of town for a wedding. They’re so expensive new that we haven’t picked up another. It’s a great game!
