Ethan and the Dentist

1

In 2 weeks Ethan and I are going to the dentist for a cleaning.  Our last trip, in July, did not go well.  In fact, it was one of those horrible, embarrassing parenting moments where you just apologize to everyone and leave so fast you forget to pay.  Ethan’s other trips to the dentist went fine, but for whatever reason he was very VERY scared and didn’t want to hygenist to do anything in his mouth.  There was lost of crying and squirming, a little screaming, and even some kicking.  Did I mention that the hygenist is a friend of ours?

I’m the insanely logical one in our family, so after this incident I tried reasoning with him, but even now, months later, he is very upset by the thought of going there.  I’m working on getting him ready and he is open to the idea of having me brush his teeth as ‘practice’.  We’re also having a contest to see whose teeth is the cleanest since we’ll be taking turns in the chair at this appointment.  Any other ideas for getting him through the next visit?

What is so strange is that Ben is the opposite, he is perfect at the dentist which is fortunate since he is the one with the problem teeth.  I find it fascinating how different our kids are while being so similar in other ways.

I happened to come across a story about a book by a Maryland dentist to help kids get over fear of the dentist. I don’t know how long the story will be online (at a radio’s web site), but for now it is online at http://tiny.cc/Mqiq2. The book is called “Woogie the Wombat in ‘The Dentist’” and is available at amazon.
