Finally we got ourselves a talker with this last baby!
Our 3 older kids were definitely not early talkers (but never gave us real reason to worry about delays either) so its a very nice change to have Jillian be more of a talker and actually a singer too! None of the other ones sang at a year but Jillian has been singing her own little versions of row row row your boat, twinkle twinkle and the ABCs. Its adorable and I should charge the camera to get a video soon. I don’t really know what the “normal” number of words are for a baby Jillian’s age but I know our other 3 did not say anywhere near as many words at this point. Jillian is 15 months old right now and she can say over 20 words, here are the ones I can think of:
- hello
- please
- da da
- daddy
- mommy
- Casey (usually she says “Case”, one of our dogs)
- dog (for the other dog Reuben)
- ouch
- no no no no no no no
- thanks
- thank you
- uh oh
- tickle tickle (or “tic tic”)
- door
- book
- row (“row row row ah bow, ee ee ee….”)
- ABC…
- hi
- ball
- me
- nose
- mouth
- ear
- eyes
- this (she is always saying “this” when she shows you something in her hands)

This is so exciting! In pediatrics, we say at 18-20 months, most kids should have a 12-15 word vocabulary.
Your number 25 reminds me so much of my daughter at this age. She was say “That?” so “S’that?” (like “what’s that?”) and point to EVERYTHING. She wanted to know the names for everything, which could get old since she would point to every drawer in a dresser lol but I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything! Thanks for reminding me of those times
My son’s speech was something else entirely. He started speaking very young, words with all the soft sounds, like “fish” and then all of a sudden, he just stopped. He came out of the other room around that time with a pen in his hand, crying, and holding his ear, and we think he damaged his ear drum. He did have diminished hearing on that side quite some time later when we could finally get an MD to listen to our concerns. (People tend to say “Boys just talk later” and then their speech delays go undiagnosed for longer)
Anyway, this is a GREAT time! You can actually watch their brains develop more every day! Language development is totally my favorite stage, especially when they can finally start telling you when something’s wrong.
The bestest best part? When they start saying “I love you” TOTALLY makes pregnancy/etc worth while
